Forests
Once
in Utena environs there were growing big forests,
and there were not any roads through it, so the
rivers were a way to reach other places. Later the
forests were cut, and villages, manors and little
towns were founded. The forests were desolated
during the wars and disorders. In 1998 the forests
took 29,3% of all District territory (36 000 ha
area). In 1985 organization of forest exploitation
made an accounting, according to which there were
10,52 mln. m3 of timber in 67 100 ha
forest area. This quantity decreased when broken
trees were cut and when private traders sold some
timber. But the forests are not only the timber.
It tempts with mushrooms and berries yields, it is
a good place for people’s rest, especially in
laky and woody parts of District. Colourful
parterres, soft moss, flowers and fruits of trees
and bushes are the most beautiful forest adornment.
